Calcium is a basic building component of bones, but it also plays an important role in the activity of heart, muscles, nerves, and blood coagulation. If the level of calcium in blood decreases, the body uses calcium from bones. The bone serves as a reservoir of calcium, from which the body uses calcium, if it is necessary. This might lead to more porous bones that are brittle, there is a higher risk of fractures, osteopenia and osteoporosis develops. What are the consequences?
Osteoporosis is a result of prolonged insufficient intake of calcium. Osteoporosis is a nightmare of seniors. Statistics show that one in three women and one in five men over 50 years suffer a fracture caused by osteoporosis. Even more alarming is the fact that fracture due to osteoporosis ocurs every three seconds in the world. The fractures of forearm, vertebra and hip are the most common. The hip fractures are the most dreadful as more than one third of the people die following the complications from it in one year after the fracture and another one third of the people become dependent on others due to the fracture. Only remaining one third of the people with hip fracture caused by osteoporosis are able to take care of themselves after the fracture is healed. The hip fracture is in 7th place from the most common causes of death in hospitalized patients in Slovakia.
Why is it important to combine calcium with vitamin K2 and vitamin D3?
If you want to be active and healthy throughout your senior age, it is extremely important to supplement the calcium in the right amount regularly and every day. The most ideal is a natural form of calcium, because natural calcium has 30% higher efficacy than chemically produced calcium. Calcium taken alone is however not sufficient and only combination of calcium and, vitamin K2 and D3 form a perfect ensemble for the health of our bones. While vitamin D is necessary to ensure the absorption of calcium into the blood, vitamin K2 directs the calcium into the places where it is needed – to the bones and teeth.
How to prevent the complications by using vitamin D?
Vitamin D affects over 200 processes in our body – in particular, it maintaints proper levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood, which are essential in the development, growth and repair of bones, proper functioning of immune process, regulation of blood pressure, growth of blood, muscle and skin cells, and in many others processes. It is difficult to get sufficient amount of vitamin D from a diet as not many foods contain vitamin D. Only 10% of vitamin D needs are covered by a diet and remaining 90%, we are able to get from the solar radiation. Since the supply of vitamin D that we get in summer will last only for a few weeks and the sun ceases to shine so intensely already in autumn, it is no wonder that nearly 60% of the population suffers from vitamin D3 defficiency. The critical period of time, for this shortage, is a period from November to February. It is therefore necessary to regularly supply vitamin D from nutritional supplements during this period of year.
Adequate intake of natural calcium, vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 will contribute to the maintenance of healthy bones, teeth, and proper function of muscles and immune system.
